Owner strapping down an RV and boat trailer as storm clouds gather over Houston

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. In southeast Houston, the big risks for boats, RVs and extra vehicles are wind, falling debris and street flooding. A plan made in May beats a scramble in September.

Before the season

  • Insurance: confirm your boat, RV and auto policies cover named storms, wind and flood, and what's required of you before a storm.
  • Documents: photograph titles, registrations and VINs/HINs; store copies in the cloud.
  • Trailer readiness: check tires, bearings, lights and brakes so you can move on short notice.
  • Know your flood risk: check FEMA flood maps and Harris County Flood Control resources for your home and any storage location.

When a storm is forecast

  1. Decide early where each vehicle, boat and trailer will be.
  2. Remove canvas, biminis, covers that can catch wind, and loose gear.
  3. Remove electronics and valuables.
  4. Secure trailers with wheel chocks and hitch locks.
  5. Photograph everything for insurance.

Clearing space at home

Getting the boat, trailer and extra car out of the driveway lets you park your daily drivers in the garage and reduces wind-blown hazards. A 28' container is also a quick way to clear patio furniture, grills (without propane tanks) and garage overflow.

After the storm

Inspect for damage before moving anything, photograph it, and contact your insurer before repairs. If your home needs work, a container keeps furniture safe while contractors are in.

Plan ahead: Stalls and containers fill up when a storm is in the Gulf. Reserve early in the season.

Build a go-kit for your rig

Keep a small bin in your truck or RV with: spare trailer key and lock key, tire gauge, lug wrench and spare trailer tire, ratchet straps, a flashlight, copies of registration and insurance, and phone numbers for your insurer and your storage facility. When a storm is coming, minutes matter.

RV-specific tips

  • Retract slides and awnings
  • Close and latch all roof vents
  • Disconnect shore power and propane
  • Remove perishables
