Houston has one of the most active food truck scenes in Texas, from brewery pop-ups to office-park lunches to festivals. But every operator faces the same question at the end of the night: where does the truck go?
Why street and apartment parking doesn't work
- Theft and break-ins. Generators, propane fittings, catalytic converters and equipment are all targets.
- Complaints and towing. Many apartment complexes and HOAs prohibit commercial vehicles.
- City rules. Parking a large commercial vehicle on residential streets can lead to citations.
What to look for in food truck parking
- Paved spaces: gravel and mud are hard on leveling jacks and tires, and dirt ends up in your kitchen.
- Security: video surveillance and controlled access.
- 24/7 access: early prep, late events and weekend festivals.
- Location: close to the freeways you actually use.
- Room to maneuver: trucks and trailers need wide turning room.
Parking vs. commissary: know the difference
Overnight parking is not the same as a commissary or servicing area. Mobile food units in the Houston area are required to report to an approved servicing area for things like potable water, wastewater disposal and cleaning. Houston adopted the FDA Model Food Code in September 2025, and mobile food unit permitting moved to the Texas Department of State Health Services on July 1, 2026. Rules change, always confirm current requirements with Texas DSHS and the City of Houston before you plan your routine.
Common setup: Service at your approved servicing area, then park overnight in a secure, paved space. Some operators also rent a 28' container for tents, tables, packaging and event gear.
